The Foster-Schmidt Dance Academy for Down Syndrome was created by Vince Schmidt and Charlotte Foster. Graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance, Charlotte Foster currently serves as founder and artistic director of SIDEWAYS contemporary dance company. Additionally, she serves as Artistic Director to the Roswell Dance Starz, a performance group for the City of Roswell that is focused on dance education and training for children ages seven through seventeen. Her choreography has received impressive feedback from noteworthy dance professionals: Ann Reinking, Steve Rooks, Wendy Perron, and Mia Michaels. Her work was presented at University of Georgia’s Center for Undergraduate Research Organization Conference (CURO) and featured in the University of Georgia’s Journal of Undergraduate Research (JURO). Through her work with SIDEWAYS, Charlotte developed her own creative movement educational program, “Everyone is an Artist”, which involves teaching children movement fundamentals in order for them to be able to express themselves through dance. The program has been presented to various schools across Georgia this year. Throughout the past five years, Charlotte has taught jazz, modern, tap, ballet, kinder dance, musical theatre, lyrical, hip hop, and voice, having students ranging from two and a half to adult. Her thesis paper regarding dance movement therapy and its applications for the various types of individuals is currently being edited for submission to the Journal of Dance Therapy.
